23-24/02/2008 The Champions at Huskisson Huskisson was the venue for two days of multisport which included the Australian Sprint and Long Course Triathlons. The events started on Saturday with the Miniman short triathlon for kids and those who were keen to have a go at a triathlon with many taking on their first event. This was followed by the Australian Sprint Triathlon Championship which involved a 750 meter swim, 20 kilometre bike and 5 kilometre run. Tanya Strevens from the Illawarra Triathlon Club took out the Australian Championship in the female 25-29 age group in a very quick time of 1:12:56.This race was followed by an inline skating race and then a very exciting invitational exhibition triathlon which saw not only elite but the top junior elite and ITU under 23 triathletes from NSW, ACT and Victoria compete over a fast short course which had to be attacked twice. Miles Waring and Sophie McLeod from the Illawarra Triathlon Club performed well in such prestigious company being amongst the younger competitors in this race. To finish off the days action a funrun was conducted which gave many locals the opportunity to be involved and saw a large turnout. The 5 kilometre run was won be Wollongong’s elite runner Russell Chin, whilst the 10 kilometre was won by the Illawarra Triathlon Clubs’ Alex Whetton with Witolt Krajewski coming in the top five. Sunday saw the Australian Long Course Championship unfold over a 2 kilometre swim, 83 kilometre ride and 20 kilometre run around the magnificent foreshore of Jervis Bay. 04/02/2008 ITC tickled Pink with Women’s Triathlon Results Kerry Augustson and Carolyn Dews travelled to Penrith on Sunday, to compete in the All Women’s Tri-Shave Triathlon. The event was held at the scenic Regatta Centre in Penrith and attracted a field of over 300 women, who competed in one of three triathlons on the day. Kerry then showed her strength on the bike leg, completing the 20km relatively flat course in 35.58. Both girls ran well, with Carolyn recording the fastest run time on the day with a 20.39 for the 5km run.The overall results for the girls were very pleasing, with Kerry winning the 30-39 age group and finishing 5th overall in the time of 1.07.01. Carolyn claimed second place in the 30-39 age group and finished 6th overall in a time of 1.07.39.

20/01/2008 Port Kembla Triathlon 4 Welcome to 2008, the skies cleared after 3 days of rain for a great race at the Port Kembla Course. A long swim in swell made for a tough swim, however experience in surf life saving helped Shane Barrie establish a lead in the swim and bike legs and his smoking 12min run over the 3.6km run course ensured the win with a 46:32 for Barrie from Aaron Royle (7 seconds behind) while Aaron Terechovs whose sub 23min bike time ensured an impressive 3rd place. The ladies race was close with Alana Yardley coming home in 54:33 with a strong run for the win whilst Kerry Augustson's strong bike performance ensured a close 2nd with Tanya Strevens having a great come back race to take a solid 3rd place.
14/01/2008 Check out the new COMMITTEE!!! Thinking of Racing this weekend? Why not do it as a team for the same entry fee. Tri NSW and Non member fees apply per team member if applicable.
13/01/2008 Sydney Triathlon Series Race 2 Kurnell Race 2 at Kurnell saw a storm in the early hours of the morning & some of us wondering why we were getting up at an ungodly hour to drive to Kurnell to race (or at least participate). With a very good rollup of 10 ITC club members & a number of elite guys from the Illawarra it was just like being at home. The water was a comfortable 23 degrees, (or so the organisers said) and the sun just starting to come from behind the clouds it was a great start to a great race. The dashing duo, Des & Brian were again on the start line with their sights set to beat their rivals with Brian placing 4th & Des placing 8th in their category. John O'Connell is looking fit and although he thought he didn’t have his best race placed 2nd in his age group. Kerry Auguston also did well and considering this is not her regular distance placed a very impressive 3rd in her category. Our star for this race was young Miles Waring who is racing extremely well at present and this is shown by his 1st place in the 14-18 year age group in a time of 1.07.53. Our newest recruit to the club, Cathy Tulloh competed in her first ever triathlon and came 2nd in her age category, Cathy Well Done!!!! Others competing from the club today were James Marsden, Aaron Crinis, Jenny Simpson & Bruce Boaler who all enjoyed the race and competed very well. To the young guns in the elite category it was great to see you there and racing so well.

20/12/2007 2007 Canberra City Half Ironman Triathlon Race Report Last weekend saw the running of the Canberra Half Ironman triathlon event staged in what are normally the perfect conditions of the environs of the national capital. However, this year presented not only the challenge of an altered bike course, which included three laps of the treacherous descent and equally tough climb out of Coppins Crossing, but also the added challenge of torrential rain throughout the race. This race was considered to be the most difficult and hardest race so far for gaining a spot in the Australian Ironman Championships to be held in Port Macquarie in April next year. Athletes undertook a 1.9km swim, 91km bike (which turned out to be 96km) and a 21km half marathon to finish.
Illawarra Triathlon Club was well represented with all athletes doing well and happy just to complete the gruelling course. Standouts were young Paul Wiedersehn who finished 13th outright in 4hrs22mins and Mark Clough, who is making a return to the Illawarra after ten years up north, who produced a very enviable 4.59 to finish well up in his category. Once again Carolyn Dews finish extremely well in 5.30, which placed her just outside the medals in her age group. In their first half ironman event Emma Bronneberg 5.57 and Jessica Simpson 5,41 had outstanding races finishing in the top 10 in each of their categories, they are both only going to bigger and better things from here. Also finishing well were Kerry Auguston 5.26 and Bob Scott 5.46 who came across the line in 6th and 7th respectively in their age groups. Bob was particularly happy with his bike leg finishing well under 3hrs in the 3rd fastest category time. Julian Fitzpatrick 5.32 made a return to the triathlon ranks after many years lay off to concentrate on running with mixed success after suffering a severe injury during the bike, however, Julian has proven he has what it takes to come back stronger than ever. Experienced stagers Geoff Stustel 5.15 and Alan Onions 5.15 came in 1 second apart after having very solid races followed closely by Steve Newman 5.25 and Greg Flood 5.39. Liz Bevan 6.25 and new comer Matt Blackwell 6.45 both raced very well under the conditions with Matt only coming into triathlon this season deciding to sign up for the race during the week for the experience, and what an experience. As a footnote former Illawarra club member Michelle Wu was the overall female winner in a time of 4.44 beating all home including the professional female field.
17/12/2007 2007 Canberra City Half Ironman Triathlon Wet, Flat, Wet. Three words to describe a great race in Canberra. The course was soaked overnight and throughout the day. Every man and his dog seemed to get a flat including club member Steven Newman 5h25. Some hot racing by the Illawarra members made for a great day overall. Here is some achievements to note. Paul Wiedersehn 12th outright 4h22m in his first half. Carolyn Dews 5h30 just missing the podium in 4th. Kerrie Augustson 6th in 5h26. Jessica Simpson finishing her first and toughest half in 5h41. Ex Club member Michelle Wu winning the Womens race in 4h44 even though she race in the 18-24 age group. So if you are looking for a challenge, make your way to Canberra next year!
19/12/2007 Port Kembla Triathlon 3 The sun came out just in time to shine on a field of 22 taking on the Tough Port Kembla Course. A new bike was enough to give Scott Harrison the fastest bike time by over 2min!! This positioned him perfectly to take the win from James Marsden and fast running Miles Waring. Kerry Augustson had a strong bike as well to hold of Jessica Simpson in the ladies. DID YOU KNOW - That during the bike ride you climb 100m and descend 100m over the six laps.
07/12/2007 Callala Bay Triathlon 1/30/8 McLeod Dominates at Callala Bay
Sophie McLeod, one of the state's most
promising triathletes, spearheaded Illawarra Triathlon Club's display
of talent across the age groups at Callala Bay last weekend. McLeod, a
NSW Institute of Sport competitor, led all the way in the junior
female professional category to win in a time of 1hr38min over the 1km
swim, 30km bike ride and 8km run course. The depth of the Illawarra club was evidenced by the continued success of Carolyn Dews, who placed second in her age group, adding to her outstanding season to date. Greg Fisher, Bob Scott and Des Comer also had success, placing second in their respective age categories. One of the highlights for the club was the performance of newcomer Dave Williamson in only his second competitive triathlon. He finished an excellent third in the 25-29 age group.Williamson is only going to improve as he develops the technicalities of the sport, as is Bulli ironman and Coolangatta Gold star Ben Allen, who finished sixth outright in the junior professional ranks in his first triathlon.
Allen is also a prospect to be followed.
He has aspirations to race over the triathlon ironman distance. Dews,
Williamson and Scott, along with the NSW development squad, had to do
without the support of coach Mark Scott who was racing at the same
time in Phuket.
27/11/2007 Newcastle Olympic Distance, Sydney Sprint 1 and Shepperton Half Steven Newman, Jessica Simpson and Wil Orellano travelled to Newcastle to take on the tough and technical Olympic distance course. The day was great for racing however the day got very warm quickly which made the heat an issue for some. The swim seemed very long with many posting "slow" swim times, the bike climbed up and through King Edward Park each of the 4 bike laps whilst the run was around the edge of the ocean. Will broke the 3h mark and Steven and Jess finished around the 2h30m mark. A solid day in Newcastle!!
Several club members made the trip to Kurnell for the first round of the Sydney Sprint Series. Brian Baird, Des Comer, John Oconnell, Kerry Augustson and others which I may have missed enjoyed another sprint race in a great location. The next event is on 13th January so get online and enter today.
Club members Mick Buffett, Jason Stevenson and Steven Thorpe took part in the Shepparton Half Ironman on the 18/11/07 in country Victoria. For the second year in a row, competitors were faced with extreme weather conditions. Thunder, lightning, heavy rain, hail and winds gusting to 50kph were the conditions for the swim and bike before the sun came out to make for a steamy but dry run. This may have been a relief though, as the days before and after the race were both 40 degrees C. It was the first trip over the distance for new club members Stevo and Thorpie, with the latter having to deal with a puncture 82kms into the bike. Stevo was able to calm down post-race despite making numerous threats during the event to the safety of Mick Buffett, who had talked him into tackling the HIM distance.
19/11/2007 Canberra Half Ironman 2007 - LETS DO IT AS A TEAM The Canberra Half Ironman is being held on 16th December 2007. There are already 11 athletes from the Illawarra Club entered for the race. We are planning to make this a great weekend for all participants and spectators. If you would like to stay together as a team, we will be booking accommodation at the Bentley Apartments at Manuka. There will be a team dinner on the Saturday in Manuka and of course race day on Sunday. To ensure that the event is as enjoyable for spectators we will be setting up the Triathlon Club tent at the start/finish area for use by Club members and supporters. A BBQ breakfast will be provided for all spectators, so feel free to come along. For competitors why not race in club colours! Current uniform is available from Sue Scott. Those spectators who have T-Shirts in Club colours you might like to wear those. For more information on this weekend or to express an interest in coming along or if you require accommodation to be booked, please email Carolyn Dews
18/11/2007 Port Kembla Triathlon 2 Another perfect day for racing saw 27 athletes take on the Port Kembla course. The wind was kind resulting in fast conditions. John Oconnell showed the speed of a gazelle and ran away with the win from Ian Kennerley and Lou Caruana. Jessica Simpson had a strong race to lead the females home in 5th place overall. The next race is on the 9 December so come on down for a great day out.
Nepean Triathlon Race Report Carolyn gets her Dews The hard work in training under the guidance of coach Mark Scott is really paying off for Carolyn Dews this season. Coming off a most successful race in the Sri Chimnoy in Canberra, Carolyn placed second in her category and in the top 20 females in the Panthers Nepean Triathlon in a very hot and large field, in excess of 600 competitors, which included elite athletes of the calibre of Brad Bevan and Pip Taylor. This race is the longest running race in the triathlon calendar, being in its 26th year, over a distance of 1kilometer swim, a very technical 30 kilometer bike sprint and a 10 kilometer run around the Olympic Regatta Centre at Penrith. The conditions were quite gruelling with the temperature climbing throughout the race. The no wetsuit swim added to the challenge for many athletes due to the 23 degree water temperature, which is too high for wetsuits for safety reasons. Paul Wiedersehn also performed extremely well coming off his win in the Nowra Triathlon finishing in the top 10 outright in a time of 1.34.40, which was an outstanding effort. Paul was very pleased with his result considering that his newly acquired time trial bike did not suit the technical course presented on the day. Also having an outstanding race was Greg Fisher who placed 4th in his category after a very strong bike leg and an excellent run. Greg was very happy with his race and expects to take this form right into the season.
14/11/2007 LOTS OF NEW NEWS NEW race dates due clashes with other events NEW Social Events (BBQ's, Christmas Party) More details to come

05/11/2007 PORT MACQUARIE HALF IRONMAN 04/11/2007 Four ITC members took part in the Port Macquarie half Ironman on the weekend. Conditions were overcast with some sun on the run making for a slightly humid day. The swim was fast and the wind was down on the bike, however the run proved to be the toughest for all with the famous Port hills pounding the legs. Steven Newman in his first of his 3 halfs of the year battled for his 5:05:44 whilst Patrick MacNeill completed his first half in 6:13:04 just in front of Marco Ciccarelli 6:15:00 and Greg Burges 6:32:24. Click here for full results.
NOOSA OLYMPIC DISTANCE 04/11/2007 Mark Scott also travelled to Noosa on the weekend and put in a solid early season result to record 2:14:22 with a sub 40min run. Results here
02/11/2007 NOWRA OLYMPIC DISTANCE RACE 28/10/2007 Two ITC members made the trek to Nowra on Sunday the 28th of October for race one of the TA run Olympic Distance series. The course was a tough one, with an undulating bike leg and a hot run leg which started with a 2.5km uphill section straight out of T2. Wollongong Uni Aquatic Centre staff member and swim squad regular Paul WEIDERSEHN took the outright win comfortably in 1:56:55 (18.31 swim, 62.13 ride, 36.11 run). Mick Buffett posted a 2:19:54 (23.33/70.25/45.53) for 11th in the 30-34’s and Greg Fisher a 2:21:21 (24.10, 71.27/45.42) for an 8th in the 45-49’s. Make sure that you don’t miss it next year.

30/10/2007 SRI CHIMNOY TRIATHLON WEEKEND - CANBERRA 27,28/10/2007
Members
and supporters from the Illawarra Club travelled to Canberra to
compete in a number of events held across the weekend with some very
good results.
On Saturday morning the Off Road Triathlon was held where competitors swam from Yarralumla 700m across Lake Burley Griffen to Black Mountain Peninsula which was the start of the challenging 25km mountain bike leg which took competitors up Black Mountain and through a mix of fire trails, single track, grass paddocks, over fences and gates, through Stromlo Forest (regeneration from the fires) and fast hard track which included a magpie attack. This was topped off with a pleasant 5km run through the bush reserves and foreshore back at Yarralumla. Bob Scott took out 1st place in 50+ category in 1.59.22 which was 5th place outright on the day. Miles and Chris Waring teamed up as "The Gongsters" with Miles doing the swim and dad riding and running coming in commendable 4th in the teams in 1.49.49. Miles them backed up in the afternoon to take on the Sprint Tri over a 500m swim, 21km bike and 5km run around the Yarralumla regions again with an excellent result of 1.04.32 coming in 5th in a very hot Under 20s field placing him in the top 10 outright, no mean feat in some very good company, well done Miles. On Sunday morning the Sri Chimnoy Classic race was held with a good size field taking on a '1500m'? swim which went forever, 40km bike a mix of the clear open roads with the notorious Canberra hills, including Copper's Crossing, and a very scenic 10km run around the lake environs. Carolyn Dews did us proud 2.29.15 , 5th overall out of the swim, 3rd Female outright and 2nd in her age group to receive a nice trophy, a cuddle from Royce (between coffee and muffins) and an early birthday present. Well done Carolyn, great racing and happy birthday. Bob Scott also backed up to complete the coarse in 2.44.55. After being at the other end of the swim he rode the 14th fastest time of the day and finished off the run to place 2nd in his category, he also got a kiss. (from Sue not Royce, thank goodness).
This is a
great weekend and would recommend it highly. Normally Friday includes
Kids Joyathon races which were cancelled this year due to the sudden
death of Sri Chimnoy last week. It would be great to see more
Illawarra members there.
25/10/2007 2007/2008 RACE CALENDER Several ITC Athletes are travelling interstate and throughout NSW during the season. Please email in your races and a spreadsheet will be put together to help you all catch up and organise travel with your club mates.
21/10/2007 Port Kembla Triathlon 1 What a great day. The weather was perfect and 26 athletes showed up to give the triathlon a go. Craig May and Phil Giles had a great battle for the win with Greg Fisher coming home for third. The coffee van was in attendance and provided a great atmosphere for a chat after the race.
The next race is on the 18th of November so
come on down for a great day out.
16/09/2007 Port Kembla Duathlon After our second Duathlon was cancelled due to very bad weather, we finally got some good weather. The youth of Ryan Hennessy just had the edge on Scott Harrison on the day.
17/07/2007 World Long Distance Championships 15 July 2007 Kerry Augustson and Jacob Payne completed the World Long Course Championships (3km, 80km,20km) in Lorient in France on Sunday. Well done guys.
