Forster ProTour Enduro - Jake Montgomery Race Report

I had been looking forward to this race as it was an enduro format which is 300 swim, 8km bike, 2km run, 300m swim, 8km bike, 2km run.

The race was to begin at 1:40pm so I spent time at camp getting to know guys in N.S.W squad as I will learn a lot from them. We rode out to race together to register and set up transition.

There were heaps of people around and had already been a lot of races. The Forster Triathlon Festival is always huge with over 9 races in 2 days. I

We walked down to swim start then we were off .Had a pretty good first swim but these guys are really strong wasn’t to far off pace and managed to get on pack. Bike leg was FAST but I was feeling confident even without my big chain ring a quick transition onto the run with a big hill at start it was hard to keep a good pace. Back into transition to run down for 2nd swim. Much harder this time, arms and legs like jelly but much better execution of swim so was able to get on to pack again. Felt even better on this bike leg really strong in cornering and spent most time on front of pack which was tiring but fun. Then back into transition again for final run. Really had the jelly legs now but held pace and made up time and positions. My final placing was 13th out of 30 U/23 competitors and 16th in the open catergory. I am very happy with result, not up there yet but making steady progress and learning with every race.

PORT KEMBLA TRIATHLON RACE 2

Another great field of 74 athletes took on the difficult Port Kembla course in cool but great racing conditions.  Junior Jake set the field alight by posting a very fast swim time and set up a day at the front ahead of Alex Ball and the fast finishing Rob Battocchio.   On the female side Erin Hargrave set the field alight with her excellent run to post a strong win from Kate De Agnoli and Bree Jones. Full results can be found here.

A reminder to all to enter the Teams Triathlon (our next race) as entry is limited to 100 teams!!! So grab you mates and get in quick.

Three Important notes for Triathlons

The swim course is normally a 2 lap clockwise course- The start will be moved south and the swim will be in a 2 lap anticlockwise direction.  This will make the swim smoother and allow the course to handle multiple wave better.

Due to the increasing numbers of competitors, we can no longer accept late registrations.  You must be in the registration before 7:30am or you will not be racing.

Please do not park on the course, we do not want your car damaged by a competitor. Please park in the side streets or on Military Road.

ITC athletes HOT in Perth

Kerry, Steven, Anna and Dave all performed well in difficult conditions at the WORLD LONG COURSE CHAMPIONSHIPS held in Perth on Sunday.  The 3km swim in the Swam River was more like an open water ocean swim with strong head winds making the first 2km very choppy and difficult. The strong winds continued onto the 80km bike leg which made riding a Time Trial bike fast challenging. As the temperature rose to 32 Degrees the wind subsided as we all made it to the unsheltered road run.  The reflected heat off the road made for a very hot 20km run. We were all happy with our efforts in the conditions and whilst we are not Age Group Worlds Champions this time we are all proud to represent Australia and it felt great to wear green and gold.  Steven from Perth.

Locally, several Illawarra athletes competed in Maitland on Sunday over the club distance 1/30/8 and mid distance 1.5/55/12 triathlons. ITC took home several medals with many placing in there age categories.  The standout performance for our club was Alex Price whom placed third outright in the mid distance triathlon against a very strong field.

RACE REPORT FROM ALEX PRICE
As always, the first race of the season is a bit of a lottery, as you have been training hard, but no real idea how it is going to go!
The race was well represented by Illawarra athletes who had also traveled up for the race! The swim was in the Hunter river and was very hard to catch onto peoples feet due to the muddy water. I think I came out of the water in about 10th position, which was ok. The ride was pretty intense from the get go. The leaders were averaging around 40-45km along the flats and hammering out of each and every turn, which is something I'm pretty new too!! With about 5km to go there was one guy about 2 min in front followed  by one about 1 min up, then a group of about 5 of us, non-drafting of course (a motorbike literally rode the 55km next to us) so I decided to do and effort and came into transition in 3rd, with about a 20sec gap to the rest of the group. The run started pretty well, I passed one guy and ran into second. However I was passed by one of the others and was in 3rd position with 8km to go... Which, let me say, is a long time to hang onto 3rd position!!
Managed to finish the race feeling pretty good, being beaten by Paul Ambrose and Chris Dmitrieff, so was very happy. Now I am in the final preparations for the Half Ironman in North Carolina in the USA on November 7th, which I can't wait for. Happy racing everyone and Enjoy it!
